  1. Shifting cultivation is a farming system 
  2. where farmers move on from one place to 
  3. another. The most common form is 
  4. slash-and-burn agriculture: land is cleared 
  5. by burning, so that crops can be grown. After 
  6. a few years, soil fertility is reduced and 
  7. the land is abandoned. A new area is cleared 
  8. while the old land recovers its fertility.
